The Feather and Quill Carvers Club, in a partnership with the city of Vancouver, Washington, presents the Columbia Flyway Wildlife Show on September 10 and 11, 2016. This is our ninth year at what Bob Sutton, past president of the IWCA, describes as the finest facility for a wildlife carving show he has ever seen. That compliment is appreciated and de- served since the city owned venue is picture perfect architecturally and functionally, and it comes complete with an outstanding staff, an impressive entrance fountain pond to float our decoy devisions, a state of the art classroom, and a premier top floor reception/show area that is framed by wrap-around windows overlooking the scenic park and river.
The Center rests on the bank of the Columbia River overlooking beautiful Marine Park and the wetlands beyond where eagles roost in the cottonwoods and Kingfishers dive for smolt. To have such a wildlife-friendly enclave in an urban environment is an example of the priority the city of Vancouver places on beautifying, utilizing, and preserving this shoreline resource for all. The shoreline promenade passing by the Center provides a breathtaking walk through the park, along the river, and connects to Wintler Park a mile or so distant to the east.Walking west from the Center about a mile, the promenade crosses highway 14 on the beautifully designed and completed Land Bridge leading to the meticulously reconstructed Fort Vancouver National Park site originally built 20 years after Lewis & Clark camped by the riverside. This is a quality historical tribute to Vancouver's history and, by itself a destination experience.
On Saturday and Sunday, artist demonstrations to be announced will be held in the Center classroom. J A painting activity for children will take place on Saturday morning run by the staff. We plan to have a team of expert judges available for private critiquing of artist’s work for those who desire it. A real highlight of our show is the free hospitality room sandwich and snack bar with a patio view of the park in appreciation for our artists and their spouses for making our show a success. The hospitality room helps us to be known as one of the friendliest shows around. The Saturday night banquet will be held in the show room at the Center with auction items and raffles to please all.
Briefly though, the CFWS specializes in realistic carvings of birds, fish, mammals, and decoys, with interpretive and minia- ture divisions. Most divisions adhere to IWCA rules. Over $7000 in awards and ribbons will be presented.
Cash and ribbons are given for Best of Show, Best of Divisions in all three skill levels, First Place ribbons in Open, and for the these special awards: The Audubon Award, Duck’s Unlimited Award, Sportswriter's Award, Mayor’s Award, Chairman’s Award, People’s Choice Awards, and Carver’s Choice Award. Don’t forget our entertaining trade contest on Sunday afternoon at the fountain pond involving floating 6" miniature trade. Check out the rules and all information about the show on our website as it is updated throughout the year.
So come to beautiful Vancouver, Washington for this year’s event and as always, our best show ever. A great time is guaranteed.
